NHS England has taken the decision to close the Care.data programme. You may have heard that the government decided to close down the Care.data project after Dame Fiona Caldicott, the National Data Guardian for Health and Care, asked them to consider the future of the programme.
A review published on 6 July 2016 puts forward recommendations for an eight- point consent model for patient data sharing with separate opt-outs for patient data used for research and for data used for running the health service.
The government remains committed to realising the benefits of sharing information and this work will now be taken forward by the National Information Board, in close collaboration with the primary care community.
We will watch and listen for further developments and advise patients accordingly in the future.
